Fished a club tournament on Lake Anna and caught largemouth on main lake docks with water depths between 10 and 15 feet on the outer edge. I also caught fish on docks within coves and creeks where the docks were within 100 to 150 feet of the main lake. Continuing warm weather has kept most fish from transitioning to fall locations and patterns, which is why main lake cover and structure played a prominent part in most anglers, including my own, fishing last Saturday. I caught fish by skipping Keitech Swing Impact Swimbaits (bluegill flash) rigged on 1/8oz Gamakatsu Horizon Head Jigs under docks. I also caught bass on the edge of docks on lightly weighted, Texas rigged Zoom Trick worms (black) on Mustad Alpha Point Alpha-Grip Finesse Hooks (1/0).

Really tough tournaments but managed a nice fish on a black buzzbait in the morning fishing shallow wood. Caught a couple on a trickworm around wood and docks. Best fish came on a 1/10 ned rig with a green pumpkin finesse trd. A lot of small fish that didn’t measure throughout the day on a trickworm as well.

Fished a club tournament on Smith Mountain Lake this past weekend and caught fish mostly on drop shots, swimbaits, and Ned rigs. Most fish were in 20 feet of water chasing shad that were positioned on secondary points in creeks and main lake coves. Fishing was challenging, as most fish were mixed in with stripers and getting baits past the stripers was difficult. My best fish (pictured) came off a deep dock piling on a drop shot.

Brush Piles
All the fish I caught as well as the strikes I had were all around brush piles up in shallow water. The chatterbait did well early in the morning but as the day went on i noticed that these fish continued busting at the surface so I switched to the Goat Toadz. All the action I had on top water was near brush piles as well.

Fish were located at secondary points in the middle of creeks. Better fish were caught off the Lucky Craft LV-500 by ripping and the fish would hit it on the pause. Also used jerkbaits to locates the fish the the bass hitting that on the pause. Best bite was 6:15-11 with the bite being tough in the afternoon.

The day was blue bird with a light breeze, the hydrilla was still alive and green. What the bass do is, tuck up under a grass ledge and wait for forage to pass by to ambush. I matched the hatch and found clear paths in the hydrilla where I can cast and work the bait to the fish. A twitch pause retrieve with the cooler water temperatures was the perfect combo that allowed me to land two very healthy bass
