The grass has died off a ton in many sections of the lower Wolf River. With this die off, the fish have moved primarily to the many rock bars and laydowns. The water was low and clear when I was out, and when this is the case, I move away from the popular plopper style baits and opt for a more finesse approach. The winning bait for me this time of year is a white fluke. Through late summer and early fall, the key to fishing this fluke is using a very small hook. These fish eat and spit the bait super fast - in most cases you can watch them do it as you sight fish. By using an undersized hook, it seems like I can get them to hang on just a split second longer, allowing me to land more fish.

Fished a kayak tournament during the whitebass run in the early spring. Had to get off the main river and fish the bends of backwater current to get a consistent bite. Anytime you could find decent depth in the river bends, you found the smallmouth. Dragging a drop shot was key to generate bites. If you get bored, go throw a spinnerbait on the main river for some whitebass.
