All season Upper Red lake is a Walleye Factory, early ice start out by getting out to the first break, as the season goes on stay on the move and just keep going deeper. Use a small snap at your spoon and a 2' leader and tie a small swivel there for line twist. Drop your spoon to the bottom and bounce it a few time off the bottom. Reel up about 2' and start jigging slowly as the fish come in keep jigging, if they don't hit reel up slowly playing keep away. Good Luck!

This was my first ever trip out on Red Lake. I got out there early ice. There Around 7-8 inches of ice. I will encourage you to go during the week.(I went on a Monday). As there is significantly less people out on the lake during the week. I caught my limit in about 5 hours. Was a ton of fun, and the fish were super aggressive. I caught my fish in around 8.5 ft of water. Though depending on the day fish will be in different depth zones, so don't be afraid to change depth. I caught fish on a clam leech flutter spoon(1/8oz) and a Clam Tikka Minnow(3/16oz). Work the baits aggressively and grab the brightest color you can find.

Water was murky from ice making so we drew them in with rattling raps and drop shots. Aggressive bite at ~9’ and snagged every one that came. Many throw backs as you can only keep one over 17”. Had a blast on the morning bite and left with limits of walleye (4/ea) and some 15” crappie by noon. We heard night bite suffered as the weekend warriors continued to arrive.
