Early spring we fished black, 1/16 oz hair jigs very slow. The most effective retrieve was just above bottom with occasional lifts and drops. Frequently the smallmouth hit the lure on the fall. Biggest was 5 pounds. The bait I linked also worked in the early spring and caught my personal best largemouth!
