I fished my first tournament of the year on the lake on Saturday, January 25th with my tournament partner Iain. It was a partly cloudy day with low temperatures in the morning at around 35 degrees and high temperatures in the afternoon at about 64 degrees, and a south wind that started out at about 8 mph and rose to about 25 mph sustained by the end of the tournament. The water temperature on the lake ranged anywhere from 52 degrees in the backs of some creeks on the north side of the lake, to 70 degrees near the power plant discharge area, but averaged between 64-68 degrees throughout most of the lake. Water clarity on the lake ranged anywhere from 1-3 feet of visibility, with a slight greenish hue to the water in the backs of the creeks. We spent the day covering water and junk fishing with everything we could think of, and ended up catching 8 fish total, all keepers, with our best 5 (pictured with the report) weighing in at 15.14 pounds, good enough for 2nd place out of 23 teams. We caught all 5 of the keepers we brought to the scales on 5 different baits in completely different areas, so the key was really just about moving around the lake and covering more water and depth zones/types of cover and structure than everyone else on the water. The lake was fully booked that day, so there was 150 boats on the water, covering more water than everyone else was the key to catching more fish than most. Most of the fish we caught were between 8 and 12 feet deep, but we also did catch one of our bigger fish later in the day that made a crucial cull in only 2 feet of water. We caught fish on crankbaits, jigs, drop shots, chatterbaits, and jerkbaits, but the biggest bites came on the chatterbaits and the jerkbaits. The lake is fishing tough overall right now, but they still gotta eat, so get out there and cover some water!

Totaled 16.24 lbs with a big fish of 5.46 lbs last Saturday. The easiest and best way to catch them is in the river and creek channels. Texas rig with black and blue swirl senko (1/4 ounce) paired with a frittside 7 (ghost color) or flicker shad (racey shad) color should get you bit all day long. Just find the coves or points with creek/river channels swinging through trees and they will be stacked throughout that line all day.
