Great Boundary Waters trip! Started in from Fall Lake Entry #24. Took the canoe to Newton Lake via the portage. Started fishing around the upper end of the falls between Newton and Pipestone. All the smallies were hanging out in the slower/deeper water behind the pockets of rock waiting for baitfish/craws to come by. Working a squarebill was great for the majority of the fish as it would get hung up less or come free with the moving water. For cleanup duty, the Zman mini max with either a Hog Farmer Spunk Shad or a Big Bite Baits Kamikaze Swimon was the ticket for getting the smallies to eat (the jackhammer's bigger hook makes it difficult). Bite around the moving water seemed to be better in the early afternoon. Early AM and late PM, the bite shifted to grass-lines and shade-lines along the bank. All fish released, as usual!
