This is a wonderful little lake for smallmouth in the Northern Highlands state forest. It is maintained by the DNR, and you must check in/out at the Escanaba ranger station. There is no cost, they just want to know specifics for their studies. This is definitely a quantity not quality lake. 16-17" is big, here. They fight well, however, and on days when they're hungry you'll do quite well. There is very little vegetation on this lake, an it is extremely clear. Long casts or deep water are your best bets, as are a flouro or mono leader. When the bass aren't shallow, they're sitting on the bottom in 15-26' water. They may still be hungry, however. I watched the finder for marks (very easy since there is little structure on the bottom), and essentially threw the Neko rig right behind me. Let it sit on the bottom for a bit and lift it a couple times. More often than not they committed and I had a wonderful SM in the boat. Different colors work well. This time I went with purplish and never had to change. They like the Xzone MB fat finesse worms, and I use an o-ring to minimize plastic wastage. The landing has only 4-5 spots for boat trailers, but there were only that many boats out on the 4th of July weekend, so no worries. There's eagles and loons on this lake, and it's just wonderful since there's zero development around it. If you hear an occasional gunshot, don't worry, there's a gun range nearby. Add this lake if you're in the area. It's small, but if you follow my advice you'll more often than not have SM in the boat!
