It's been very good late-ice perch fishing here in Northern Wisconsin. Perch have been caught in less than 10' of water anywhere there is good weed growth and small bluegills hanging out. Small spoons really get these fish fired up and they can be worked very aggressively

Jerkbait on grass edges is a great way to catch smallmouth in the fall on upper long.

First outing of the year. Launch at 530am was 38 degrees outside with ice forming on the boat. Long Lake in Washburn County, WI. First time at this lake. Lake had vegetation in certain areas, fallen timber, rocks, boulders, but was mostly sand. Sonar/livescope showed schools of bait fish just about everywhere. Water Temps at launch showed 40 degrees but rose up to just under 44 degrees throughout the day, with outside temps rising up to 72 degrees with 15-20mph winds. Lake was extremely choppy starting at about 10am. No fish in the first hour, was not sure where to find them at this time of year and weather. Tried finessing worms, small swimbaits, Texas rigs, and had no luck in areas 15-25 feet that showed fish on sonar. Seems like they didn't want it. Just swam away. Then, I used sonar to look for rocks, timber, etc., in shallow areas(6ft or less). I began to cast swim jigs, 3/8oz with swimbait trailer, and got my first bite. 4lbs 6oz Largie. This area had few fallen timber, but small rocks mainly covered the surface below. Throughout the day, I caught 9 bass. All were over 4 pounds except for one, which was 3-11. Two of them were Smallmouth. All were caught using swim jig, chatterbait, and Rippin rap. The areas were all rocky surface below with some fallen timber in 6ft or less. The vegetation areas were dead zones on my visit. I believe the bass were beginning their pre-spawn. I thought the water temps were still too cold, but with the weather warming up, it could be true. If you aren't having luck this early season, try going shallow with fast-moving baits.
