Baitfish
Excellent fall walleye fishing is happening right now on Leech Lake. During the daytime hours, look to mid-depth flats holding large schools of baitfish to concentrate feeding walleyes. Key depths are 10-14'. Your sonar unit is key - if you're not seeing baitfish, you won't find walleyes. Slow troll large minnows on 1/16 oz jigs rigged on Seaguar InvizX coupled to Seaguar Smackdown braided main line. Speed 0.5-0.7 mph; you want to jig to tickle the bottom occasionally but not drag. Snap-jigging with 1/4 oz jigs and fluke-style soft plastics is also productive in these same areas. Expect a good mix of "overs" and eaters. After dark long-line troll Shallow Shad Raps (#7, purpledescent and firetiger), Scatter Minnows (purpledescent, perch), X-raps, or Rogues in 4-10 feet of water, Clean-bottom shallow flats are producing, as are weed edges and rocks. Water temp are falling through the low 50s - now's the time to tap into Leech's fall bounty!
