I was fortunate to get a couple nice fall days to fish in the UP with my Dad. Gogebic is well known for its walleyes and jumbo perch so the smallmouths are not just overlooked but shunned by many of the locals. With the mild fall temps, water temps were still in the low 60's. We started looking in the 15-20' depths around extended rocky points, and old fish crib structures. After covering a lot of water, we had only a few nice crappies for our efforts. We moved shallower as the sun got higher and fancasted swimbaits and rattle baits over the weed cover. We found a mix of pike and all sizes of smallmouths in and around the thickest weed patches we could find. Most productive depth proved to be about 6-8' but the biggest smallies were closest to the sharpest weed dropoffs. Smallies ranged from about 12 inches up to several in the 18-20" range. While you are on this beautiful water body, take a few minutes and grab some of the sea salt chicken wings from The Hoop!

Fishing in 8-15 Feet of water targeting schools of baitfish to find the bass. Once the bass are found they are typically stacked in groups of 4-6. They were on rocky weed edges and any outlying structures.
