Once water temp gets above 55 deg then right through the post spawn, work 1/4 oz buzzbait along 10' contour/breakline fan casting along break and up over spawning flats. Smallmouth will rise from cover (rocks, weed patches, wood) in 10 ft of water or more and explode on buzzbait especially when there's a slight chop on the water. Have a follow-up bait ready (5" single tail grub on jighead or weighted wacky rig senko) for times when smallmouth misses buzzbait. Cast right back to spot where smallie short struck buzzbait. Pic is one where my dad made a follow-up cast with a grub to a smallie that "mis-fired" after exploding at buzzbait.
