I took a group of 4 other anglers to learn about ice fishing. 15 trout were brought through the ice and we missed at least that many other bites. We tried jigs, spoons, corn, mealworms, red worms and a slab rap. The fish seemed to be intimidated by anything but a bare hook with a red worm or mealworm on it. Giving the bait a little jigging motion did attract the fish. They were located closer to shore in 7-10 ft of water. Because of the shallow water they were also very sensitive to people walking on the ice. Rods further from the group caught more fish. If not actively jigging a Finicky Fooler or JawJacker helped set hooks. Also, using a size 6 or 4 Circle Hook helped keep fish on the line.

The trout were extremely picky. I had no problem "calling" them in with a nickel and chartreuse Swedish Pimple, but usually just looked at it and swam away. The most effective method was a small worm or piece of cocktail shrimp on a Finicky Fooler or JawJacker.
