This report is based off of my most recent trip out to Lake Fairfield on October 23rd, 2021. On this particular day, the lake was right at normal pool and the water clarity was pretty good, as you could see anywhere from 2 - 4 feet down into the water depending on which end of the lake you were on, and if you were on a protected bank or one with the wind blowing into it real hard. We fished all day, starting just before sunrise which was around 6:00 AM, until almost 5:00 PM that afternoon. It was early fall in Texas in terms of the water conditions, as the water temperature was still in the low to mid 70's in degrees fahrenheit, and the outside temperatures were still comfortable enough to fish all day in shorts and a sun shirt, probably in the 65 - 75 degree temperature range all day. The sun this day was high and bright, but there were a few clouds in the sky as well, and the wind was blowing consistently between 10 - 20 mph throughout the day, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph at times. After catching a few fish on a hollow body frog early in the day, we spent the rest of the day covering water with a ZMan Jack Hammer Chatterbait, specifically the 3/8 oz size in the "Spot Remover" color. We would throw this bait down the many weedlines and grass edges/ditches that are all around Lake Fairfield, particularly focusing on grass edges that were in slightly deeper water than the rest, or ones that had a good deal of wind blowing into them. We would just cast the chatterbait as far as we could parallel to the weedline, and slowly reel it back along the edge. Most of our fish were caught in anywhere from 3 - 10 feet of water, and we caught over 50 fish between myself and my 2 buddies I was fishing with that day. Our best 5 on the day would have gone a little over 17 pounds, and our biggest single fish probably would have went a little over 5 pounds. The lake was fishing extremely well and should continue to do so throughout the rest of the fall and winter season.

I went out with a buddy on 12/18/21. We fished from sunrise to around 4:00 PM. It was overcast all day and the wind was blowing between 10 and 20 miles per hour sustained all day. We originally started throwing chatterbaits up shallow, but after about 30 minutes with no bites, we pulled off the bank into about 8 to 15 foot of water and worked jerkbaits, rattle traps, swimbaits, and wacky rigs in that depth zone where the grass begins to taper off and become more scattered. We were using the forward setting on livescope to find fish suspending over the grass edge in those depth zones, and then casting our baits to them and working them in front of the bass, watching them eat the baits on the screen. There seemed to be a lot of bass suspended under pods of bait, but most of them would not commit to our lures as we worked them by. We also had a few bites that felt pretty decent dragging jigs along the bottom in 12 - 15 feet where there is a hard edge in the grass due to its inability to grow any deeper, but were unable to land most of them. The last time I was at the lake, we caught over 50 fish and had a limit of 17.5+ pounds, so this trip was much tougher as we only landed around 15 fish and only a few of size. However, several large fish were hooked and came off, and we estimated that if we had landed all of the bites we had we could have had a 20+ pound limit, so the quality of bites was still there despite a drastic decline in the quantity of bites from our last trip out. The water temperature on the lake was between 61 and 65 degrees fahrenheit and it was between 65 and 80 degrees fahrenheit outside the duration of the trip. The fishing was definitely slower than usual and the bite was off, if I had to do it again I would make some more adjustments, maybe changing the color or profile of the baits I was throwing a little more often until I found something that the fish were actually committing too, as we had no problems generating bites, but had a tough time landing the bites we got. Nonetheless, the fishing was still fairly productive and using livescope to find suspended fish was crucial to us having a successful day. I have included a photo of some of the better fish my buddy caught while we were out there, thank you for reading, I hope this report can help you all catch some fairfield giants!

One of the best ways to catch giant pre-spawn bass on Fairfield is running a red or white chatter bait ticking along the tops of the grass mats on main lake points. I have always found that being a way to easily find fish during this time of year.

This report comes from my buddy Trey McMeen from his most recent trip out to the lake a few days ago. I have not been able to get out on the water yet this month as I have been really busy with school. Luckily, Trey has been on some fish and was nice enough to give me the details on how he has been catching them so I could share it all with you. You can follow Trey on instagram @treym_16. He is a hammer and you should definitely check him out! This report and the next one I do will come from him, and then it will be back to my usual reports as I have two tournaments coming up on Lake O' the Pines and Lake Fork the next two weekends. Anyways, Trey spent the day on Fairfield targeting deeper bass in 20 - 25 feet of water with a small kietech swimbait on a megabass okashira swimhead. He would find the fish on his livescope unit down on the deeper weed edges and then cast to them and slowly reel the swimbait in front of them and watch as they ate the bait. Overall, he caught 20 bass on the day with his best 5 going for 29 pounds, including a 10.13 pound kicker which I have included a photo of on the report. He said the water temperature on the lake the day he went was 46 degrees, with the weather conditions being a cold start to the morning, but gradually warming up later on into the day. The skies were clear the day he went and there was a steady south wind. He credits the livescope unit he has on his boat for being the biggest tool he used to catch them that day, as the fish were suspending in deeper water near the edges of the submerged vegetation, and it would have been extremely difficult to catch them if he didn't have the forward facing sonar.
