Minnesota’s Pro Tip of the Week: Fall fishing offers fantastic bite
Fall is a fantastic time to troll on any of the rivers. The St. Croix and the Mississippi have hot bites going on No. 7 Shad Raps trolled near the bottom. Plus, the multi-species list of fish biting now includes sauger, white bass, channel cats, and flathead catfish.
If you’re in a good walleye-fishing area, there’s a good chance that you might get a big flathead to hit your bait while you’re simply trolling for walleyes. It’s currently more important to fish the right bait rather than a specific depth of water.
Once the river water cools, fish will swim to deeper parts of the river, so be prepared to fish deep. Another key to effectively trolling is to not fish with a tight drag because when a fish hits, it could break your line or straighten your hook.
