Towards the end of the prespawn, when the bass were posted right along the first drop offs near the shore, I had great success throwing small swimbaits. The more natural the color and finesse the retrieve, the better it worked. Best results came on a slow retrieve with short, soft pops to add a fleeing action.

Three Oaks is a great fishery, especially for producing large prespawn bass. Early in the season, I went out on the bridge to the island to fish the substantial rock drop offs there. Someone else was hogging the money spot, but I fished one of the island coves just creeping a hair jig along the bottom in about 10-20 feet of water. I was using a 1/8 oz black marabou hair jig. Linked is a buck tail jig, which works better in the warmer months since I can’t link the exact one.

Tossed this wacky rig right next to the weed line and he took the bait almost instantly. I’ve been having really good luck using the junebug color in any soft plastic so far this summer. She was pushing about 4lbs maybe a little more. Was a beautiful fish.
