Fun trip out chasing Perch on Owasco Lake. We found the fish roaming rock rubble and sand flats with scattered weed beds in the 15- to 28-foot range. Best bait was a 3/16 oz. Hayabusa FPJ960 Jig Head dressed with, a Keitech 3 or 3.5 Easy Shiner and a Keitech 2.8 Fat Swing Impact, cast it out, let it fall to the bottom on a semi-tight line and begin a slow steady retrieve. Fifty percent of the strikes occurred as you began the retrieve and if that didn’t happen then I’d kill the retrieve, let the bait fall for a 2 or 3 count then start the retrieve again and that’d usually generate the strike. Most of the bites were very light, as the perch would just swim up behind the bait, take it in, and keep swimming toward you. I did have a few that crushed it on the strike, but today that was the exception and not the rule. Super fun times casting these Keitech Swimbaits using a Temple Fork Outfitters Professional Series rod, model PRO S763-1, 7’ 6”, ML power fast action, paired with a Shimano Spinning reel spooled with 4 lb. test line. All said and done, three of us caught over 200 perch in a 4-to 5-hour session casting Keitech swimbaits.
