How to Tie Pete's RP Knot | Polish Pete

What's up everybody, it's Polish Pete and we are tying some knots today. This one happens to be my favorite knot. You're gonna see most of the other knot tutorials we do here for you. Done by Jacob and Joe, that's because they're younger than me, smarter than me, and they have better eyes than me. And they can tie some pretty intricate knots. The best line to line knot on planet Earth right now that we know about is still the F-G knot. And I actually did tie that knot for a whole season of my fishing life. I was tying it at home before I go fishing and the ones that I finished properly were the best knots I've tied. They flowed through the guides much easier, all that stuff. But I did screw up sometimes and I wouldn't finish them properly and they would just come apart. I didn't break them fishing but the knot would actually just start coming apart on me. And I learned a lesson that it was too hard for me to tie in the boat at the time. I was having trouble seeing what I was doing. I didn't know what to do with my hands. So I took Gerald Swindles' advice and stuck with the knot that was working for me. It was the first line to line knot I learned. And it happened to be the one for me that I still use today and knock on wood. It doesn't break. I haven't had any issues breaking at all. Whether it's big fluorocarbon down to small fluorocarbon, finessy stuff up to 20 pound test with 40 pound braided line and 20 pound fluor ocarbon. I never break this knot. So the disadvantage of this knot I'm going to show you is it is rough or going through the guides. And sometimes the little annoying, to me the most annoying part about it is it gets hung up in your tip when you're just trying to hook your bait back down to your rod or something like that. Sometimes it will flip in if your leader gets short as you're cutting it down or something like that it will get hung up in your tip. Just basically when you're trying to get the collect your bait back from the top of the rod. As far as casting I've never had an issue with it with the knot, not hanging up in the guides and not going through. But anyway we'll jump right into it. This is, we're using the white rope here to signify the fluorocarbon. You can do your guess at what pound test it is, whatever makes sense to you. I'm going to say this is 20 pound fluorocarbon right here and this is 40 pound braided line the orange rope. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to just double the line over with the fluorocarbon and I'm going to give myself some extra room here so that I got a long tag end because I'm learning the knot. We're learning it together. And this loop here is very important for me that I try and keep it vertical through this whole process. I don't want it flat like this or twisting around on me. I want it vertical the whole time. So I'm always going to be trying to pinch it. With fluorocarbon it's actually easier than with this rope. This rope keeps trying to roll over on me and the fluorocarbon actually stiffen up it. Usually stands up and makes it easy for me to do this knot, easier to do this knot than with the rope. So here's my braided line. I'm going to come through and I'm going to, this is the way I remember it easily first step, double up fluorocarbon. Now I'm going to come through with the braided line towards myself and I'm going to give myself lots of extra tag end for this example here. And I'm going to pinch. Now with my pointer finger, my braid and the back end of the loop of fluoroc arbon here and I'm going to start wrapping my braid over the top of this fluorocarbon and working my way down the double up fluorocarbon. Try to give yourself some gap in between your wraps because it does make the knot more streamline and a little bit stronger to have your wraps laying in between each other versus just sloppily going down and back over the top of them because you're going to see I'm going to now wrap back the opposite direction. I used to not care about that and believe it or not the knot doesn't break. It just gets a little bunchier and fatter and it just gets a little bit more hung up in your tip when you're like I said trying to hook your bait back up or collect your bait to make another flip or something like that. Now once again like I said I wanted to keep this loop vertical before I wrap back down the other way. With this rope it tends to just lay over so I'm going to have to remember to straight back up vertical before I come back through. But I'm going to wrap down now in between the wraps I made on the way down. Try and lay them down as evenly as I can here. Going back down here laying them through over the gaps. Now I'm going to straighten this loop back up so it's vertical again. Now this is where my knot's a little different than the typical one. Now you can go down about five times to nine times is what I found to be the key. With light line I do go down nine times with bigger line maybe I only go six and then I come back up. But when you get to this stage and you've wrapped your way back up everybody else and a lot of these I've seen them all said to go back through the opposite way. It does pull down nicer that way but the way I learned it was to come back through towards yourself again which is what I'm going to do now. I'm going to come back through towards myself. I found this to be much stronger this way coming back through towards myself again. Now you would wet this but for demonstration purposes being roped that doesn't do anything here in this situation but I'd get this knot super moist and I'm going to pull on my tag ends here and kind of start snugging this all up and down together and you 'll see that it creates a perfect line to line connection there that is immensely strong. I can pull on this like crazy and I do recommend you kind of give this thing the beans a little bit. Pull on it pretty hard pull on it in both directions. You don't need knot pullers or anything like that but I'll just wrap the lines around my fingers a little bit so that I don't kink the fluorocarbon bad and I'll give it some really good pulls and you can cut your tag ends pretty tight on this. It usually will not ever unravel on me or anything like that. The fluorocarbon being the culprit a lot of times to hanging up in your guides. You want to cut it as close as you possibly can. Good scissors are key in this situation because of the fact that if you leave a sharp pointy tag end hanging out of your fluorocarbon it will hang up more or maybe get caught on itself sometimes. The line will catch on the knot and make the knot look like that going through your guides. Cut your tag ends short. Get some good scissors when you do this but simple knot basically that loop vertical. Bring that braid through. Remember to wrap down. Don't wrap back up through the gaps. Pull it down and before you go fishing with it give it some good yanks. Pull on it pretty hard. Do little pops too to make sure that it's not just going to come apart on you and this knot is not going to break on you when you're fishing. It's a really good knot, really simple knot. Good one to sit at home and learn how to do. I call it pizza or pea knot. It is also called the modified Albright. It's got a bunch of different names but it's a real simple knot. I suggest you try it first if you are getting into braid to fluorocarbon leader and then get into the ever famous Fg knot. [Upbeat music]
