Oct. 20th, 2023. Calm and sunny. We didn't get a lot of bites but a few bass for each of us on a 4 hour outing. The best one, 4 lb, bit my son's black buzz bait in 3 ft of water over coontail. I caught a 16.5" bass walking a frog in the same type of area.

I fished Mink Lake that is accessible via a channel from Somers. There is an island on Mink. The west shore of that island has always produced bass for me. Either a chatterbait or a spinner bait has been golden. Somers and Mink are both fun to fish.

Had some REALLY quality bass early morning especially. Things got a little slower around noon after it rained but we still caught em. Fish were further off the bank in 4-5' of water. Fished multiple techniques throughout the day and kept coming back to the chatterbait. It was by far the most productive. I'd recommend stocking up on chatterbaits though as there are some very large pike in this lake as well. 😉

Somers and Mink Lake have low water clarity, especially this year, 2021. A chatterbair creates vibration. Add a craw trailer and the bass went wild on a shoreline off the west coast of the island on Mink Lake. Over an hour of consistent strikes. Tons of FUN!

Somers Lake has tons of great habitat for Largemouth. Surprisingly clear water conditions compared to the connected lake to the north. If wind is low, this opens up opportunity for sight fishing, particularly along the northern shoreline of this lake. Cast out a jerk bait on a moderate action rod on the front and back of weed lines. Regulate cadence of jerks and pauses to fine tune where the fish may react for a bite. The husky jerk is my favorite bait this time of year for three reasons: 1) it's an excellent bait to cover water and pick apart structure , 2) it's semi-forgiving when encountering emerging weeds - usually a twitch and you're clear , and 3) it'll trigger a reaction from a variety of species from pike to the overzealous crappie.

Crushed it today! Multiple bass in the 4lb range with a couple approaching 5lb. They were after the weightless Texas rigged senko (black/blue) straight to braid being that it's already thick vegetation out there. Caught them both up shallow and in about 6' of water on the edges of grass mats.

MONSTER BASS caught on a frog in the lilly pads. Some real nice bass in Mink Lake.
