Had a decent afternoon with about 20 crappie. Had good luck jigging with wax worms on the VMC Bullfly jig or bobber and crappie minnow. Roughly 30' of water. Fish we're suspended in about 20'.

Find the edge of deep basins after dark. Minnows on vertical style jigs work best. Crappies higher up in the water column tend to be the most aggressive.

Fished the community holes on west rush, found fish from middle column down to bottom of lake. Crappies ranged from 10-11” with. Few 12’s mixed in. Ice ranged 20” with approximately 14” of clear ice and 6-7” of white ice. Lot of snow on top of ice. One road is plowed on West Rush. Wont be long until open water season so trek lightly and cautiously during this late season. Pinhead minnows worked well tipped with minnow head or plain. Also any plastics seems to work as well. No sweet to get them to bite, they are hungry and fattening up for spawning season, so remember to let the big girls go.

Got out on the hard water for probably the last time driving, that is, it was the last hoorah for the truck! Found nice perch and bluegills, but they were on the move! The night before, we had rain and a blizzard, the weather sure changes fast here in Minnesota! We originally started fishing in 13-14 feet of water, and soon found the fish were moving up into shallower depths, most of the hottest bites and larger panfish came from 5-7 feet of water. It was a 42 degree day with the barometer sitting at 30.01, the fish were extremely active, on the move, we had to hole hop to keep up with them. Once on a school, you could pull 3-5 fish from a hole and then they were on the move again! Small jigs with waxworms and Kenders K-Rips were used, all were wonderbread colored, besides the Rattlin’ Flyer spoon, that was orange and gold, however, based on their ferocity and hunger that day, I would guess that they would hit just about anything that resembled an insect or minnow or fry. Large predators were also present that day, moving the panfish around, as we saw multiple pike chase them on the Garmin Live Scope. The panfish were not hindered however, and would continue hitting after pike took breaks in between feeding. Matching the forage is key, we know that the panfish there were feeding on aquatic insects and fry, many right up under the ice, they were no longer hugging the bottom. If you’ve never ice fished shallow, especially at the end of the ice season you’re missing out, they move up to the water that is now warming at a faster rate and following the forage! Having panfish slam your lure as it passes the bottom of the ice hole is some of the most fun fishing you could experience. They’ll hit before you even see your bait clear the hole on electronics! The ice was gone just 2 weeks later. Match the hatch, follow the forage and enjoy your time on the water! Good luck out there!

So during the afternoon 1pm-3pm we were fishing 16-18 feet of water using clam dropkick jigs with a Waxie. This worked really well for crappie and perch. Keeping the bait a foot off the bottom raising it 3/4 feet and let it drop. During the evening 4pm-6pm we moved to 12 feet. This brought the same fish using the same method but this time was a Akua Waxie cream color by Kenders.

        Perch

Fishing in 12-14 feet using a Kenders Tungsten Akua Waxie jig. We were using multiple colors of this jig but the big perch overall hit better on the cream color.

Early ice so far we have been doing extremely well with tip-ups and big Pike. The tip-ups have been in 5-6 feet of water on the ledges leading to 12-14 feet of water using a sucker minnow.

Took the kayak out for the fishing opener. Caught bass, walleye, and northern pike, all on a 3/16 oz VMC swim bait jig with a Bass Assassin Elite Shiner 4” paddle tail. All fish seemed to be schooled up between 6-10 FOW along the ledges.
