I am the Bass Pundit and would prefer this report to be about bass, but Platte Lake had a very severe winter kill this year. Not sure if any resident fish survived this time. I know I am catching very few bass and lots of pike, primarily small, in an area that has been dominated by bass for years. If you are after bass I suggest sticking to Sullivan or putting on a wire leader because these pike are hungry.

Bass are slowly coming out of the post spawn funk, which means it’s time to frog the rice, reeds, and slop in Platte Lake. Cover water and slow down when you hear or see activity.

Fishing on Platte Lake for bass this year has been slow, but the size of the fish somewhat makes up for it. This morning I got three bass. A 3lber that hit the Ozark Rig. And 2.5 and 4.80 that hit the Terminator Jig with Z-Man Hella CrawZ trailer. All fish were caught in the reeds on the Southern end of the lake in three to five feet of water.

Spent a couple hours on the north end of Platte last night. My brother throwing Strike King Sexy Frogs and me throwing Z-Man Billy Goats. His 3lber edged out my 3lber for big bass of the night. We both caught 5 bass a piece. We both missed it couple of opportunities. Our best six went 15.25lbs

The wind was blowing out of the SE this morning, so I thought I would give the North end that’s protected from that wind direction a try. I have mostly written off Platte this year due to a severe winter kill and have spent the vast majority of my time this year in Sullivan. I lost a two pound bass that hit my Snagproof Frog in pads, rice, and reeds. I missed a couple of other bites, but they easily could have been pike. I then moved out of the slop and caught four bass on the Greenfish Buzzbait in short order on a shallow coontail flat that is tucked in behind the reeds. I also caught a bunch of mostly small pike. I also got a nice bass in the rice and pads along the inside edge of the reeds on the Snagproof. I got my final bass of the trip along the North side of the Big Island on the buzzbait. My biggest bass was three and a half pounds. I consider getting six bass on Platte a victory at this point.

Fished for a couple of hours tonight with my brother . We didn’t start getting fish until we got into an area that is full of pads this year. Normally, it’s wild rice, but not in 2022. We ended the night in some reeds up north with both of us losing multiple fish. Tonight was brutal for me only landing two dinks. Our best 6 didn’t quite make 10lbs.

Was running about 35-minutes behind this morning, so the sun was up shortly before I arrived at my first spot. I caught 2lber right away on the Bobby’s Perfect. Had a couple more boils in the reeds. Moved farther North to slop and reeds. Got the 4lber there and a few more on the Terminator Poppin Frog. I decided to go back to my staring spot and try the Poppin Frog. Nothing, so I headed toward Sullivan and got a bass on the Poppin Frog and Z-Man Billy Goat before I passed into Sullivan.

Started out the evening catching fish up to 2lbs on an All-Terrain skipping jig (brown/back) with Z-Man Goat (green pumpkin) and a Zoom Super Fluke (albino). Also got a few bonus bass between docks out of slop and pads on a Bobby’s Perfect Frog and a 3lber on a craw tube (black/blue) after it missed the frog. I went back and picked up my brother Steve and headed to the north end of the lake. He got a total beast of a 17.5-incher right away in the reeds on a Bobby’s Perfect (sparrow).. I got a couple 2lber on Z-Man Billy Goat (green pumpkin) as well as Steve on the Bobby’s Perfect. As the sunset I took us to a reed island where Steve got a couple 2lber and I got the night’s big bass (4.18) all on a Bobby’s Perfect. We missed doubling up twice; I messed it up the first time and Steve the second.
