The Daiwa Emcast bait running function paid off today. I Carolina Rigged a Zoom U-Tail Tequila Sunrise swimming worm on The Lake Mary side. I dragged it along the bottom using a slow retrieve. I would reel it in for a yard and pause for a 3-5 count. On the pause, I engaged the bait running function. On one of these pauses, the line began to spool out and reel began to scream. I waited for a 5 count, cranked the bait running function to a close and achieved a solid hook set. I love these reels by Daiwa. Most brands have bait running functions in their lineups but not in the 2500-3000 range. I plan on outfitting all of my rods with these reels, matching spool size to each rod. I find them to be competent in the lure game as well as quite handy in live bait functions!

I wasn’t expecting much action today. I got out later than usual, but took advantage of some lingering cloud cover from last night’s rain. I attacked the inlet of Lake Ladora. The water was flat. The spro popping frog elicited a big strike from a nice pike. But alas, I reacted to the breech and pulled the frog away. The Daiwa Tatula is the crown jewel of my power fishing lineup. It casts a mile weather driven by a Daiwa Samurai 2500 or Revros 3000. It’s a beauty to look at as well.

The bass on the Lake Mary side are engorged on dragonflies. Every so often, they can be pulled off of the mats by a senko rigged wacky or finesse. I haven't had any luck with Texas Rigs here as I think they sink too quickly for fish who are orienting their gaze at the surface.

I got up early enough to try a dry fly with horse fly pattern. Dragonfly would be preferred but I don’t have any in the bug locker. Two unconvincing strikes near milfoil and reeds. I covered a lot of water with a jitterbug but no action.I transitioned to a No.11 floating Rapala black and white, using popper, slow, dive, and faster jerk bait retrieve but no action. I finished the morning with a Zoom Fluke which hasn’t been successful since early June. 20” Northern Pike in the net. Her color seems pale to me. Gills were nice and red. Weight seemed normal.

On the Lake Mary side, there is a rim of milfoil. Small bass are in with the bluegills and they’re breaking the surface for dragonflies. Fly fishing May do well here and I may try that technique tomorrow morning. This 1.5 or so pound Bass grabbed my son’s Mr Twister grub…unweighted is key here. While the bluegill and perch may follow weighted presentations down, the bass are high in the water column and dive slowly to the baits presented. They prefer those dragonflies.

After a couple of weeks bluegillin with my 3 year old son, I made it out early today. Overcast conditions persist after a night of scattered thunderstorms. Water is clear but algae blooms are scattered in distribution. I worked the headwaters which are shallow and hydrilla is high enough that feeding pike can be seen with their dorsal fins out. A coaxed a couple of strikes on buzz toad and floating frog presentations. Another strike was had on a finesse rigged 6” worm. On the bluegillin side, I was able to make some observations at Lake Mary. Bass are hitting dragonflies. They are in the weed rim for cover and surfacing aggressively as dragonflies hit the water.

Blue was the color of choice. I got 4 pike in triple digit heat. I wacky rigged the senko for 1. The other 3 hit the crank bait on slow retrieve with pauses mixed in.
