The Daiwa Emcast bait running function paid off today. I Carolina Rigged a Zoom U-Tail Tequila Sunrise swimming worm on The Lake Mary side. I dragged it along the bottom using a slow retrieve. I would reel it in for a yard and pause for a 3-5 count. On the pause, I engaged the bait running function. On one of these pauses, the line began to spool out and reel began to scream. I waited for a 5 count, cranked the bait running function to a close and achieved a solid hook set. I love these reels by Daiwa. Most brands have bait running functions in their lineups but not in the 2500-3000 range. I plan on outfitting all of my rods with these reels, matching spool size to each rod. I find them to be competent in the lure game as well as quite handy in live bait functions!

I wasn’t expecting much action today. I got out later than usual, but took advantage of some lingering cloud cover from last night’s rain. I attacked the inlet of Lake Ladora. The water was flat. The spro popping frog elicited a big strike from a nice pike. But alas, I reacted to the breech and pulled the frog away. The Daiwa Tatula is the crown jewel of my power fishing lineup. It casts a mile weather driven by a Daiwa Samurai 2500 or Revros 3000. It’s a beauty to look at as well.

I had a toothy critter break me off cleanly on a wacky rigged senko as well as a fluke. Slow finesse is carrying the day. Normally I’m able to sense the bite and hook set quickly but these two fish clobbered my baits this evening.

Slow retrieve. Patient hook sets. Aggressive hook sets will pull the bait out and put fish off generally. Northern Pike are coming in at 24"-29" range. Bass haven't left the nests and aren't feeding quite yet.

Water is warming. I landed 2 northern pike. No other strikes (19" and 30"). Bass are beginning to cruise solo as water warms up quickly. These may be females off the nest. The bass are hugging the reeds where many small bluegill and carp minnows are harboring. algae is blooming and beginning to surface in very small pockets. I'll begin targeting bass very early mornings beginning 5/27 and I'll have an update then.
