Last Wednesday I went to High Rock lake to practice for the qckbf tournament I had yesterday. Practice started out really slow, losing my first two bites. But those bites gave me the confidence to throw my favorite technique, a jerkbait. After those two bites, I put the jerkbait away. I tried to find a other technique or two to compliment what I had already found. Not finding the compliment ended up being my downfall during the tourney. I decided to throw the jerkbait down a really good staging area. First two casts, nothing. During the retrieve of the third cast, I thought I got hung. Until it started swimming. After a stressful battle, my net less self was able to get her close enough to grab. All I could say was oh my god over and over. I’ve never seen a bass like this in person, let alone catch one. All said and done, she measured 22” long, almost 20” around and 8.25 pounds. I also caught a 21” pre spawn giant, and a 18.75” pre spawn.

Very few boats on High Rock yesterday and everyone seemed to have modest luck after a weekend cold front. Water remains 54-56 degrees and fairly stained. The baitfish I found remain in at least 10-12 feet of water. My one bite was on a shallow rock pile in a major creek on a Jackall TN70 Lipless Crankbait in Crawfish. Luckily, it was a 6 lb 10 oz High Rock PB.

Water had come up to 52 degrees so I targeted main lake and secondary points hoping they had moved up a little bit. Caught 4 in 3 1/2 hours all on main lake points.

We started out the morning fishing the shad spawn on main lake rip rap. We did this by throwing a buzz bait and a spinnerbait parallel to the rip rap. Once the sun got up we started fishing shallow coves in the backs of creeks. We threw the Magdraft around shady seawalls and skipped it up under docks. We let the Magdraft sink for a few seconds and then reeled it very slowly. The cruising bass and bass on beds could not resist it. This technique is great for catching bigger-than-average fish.
