I mainly focus on DT10 crankbaits in the winter months. During the day the smallmouth and some largemouth will get extremely shallow on the dam pushing up shad and ambushing them. Depending on the water clarity I switch up my colors accordingly. I highly recommend a 7.1:1 gear ratio tatula 103 for extreme casting distance.

We’re coming up on a great time of year to target Smallies on Grapevine. Find your favorite rocky points or rip rap and go slow roll a red crank bait down it. My favorite is the Spro Rock Crawler 55 MED diver (9-14ft). Not many baits search like this one!

I went out to the lake on 01/05/22 for a few hours. The water temperatures on the lake ranged anywhere from 53-56 degrees fahrenheit throughout most of the lake, and I did find one creek where the water was substantially warmer, as warm as 67 degrees fahrenheit at the very back of the creek. The lake was about 2.5 - 3 feet low and I was catching smallmouth in about 8-12 feet of water along the rip rap at the dam and the chunk rock banks adjacent to it. They were hitting the bait about halfway back to the boat with the boat positioned parallel to the bank. It was slow as I had about 5 bites total but they were all healthy fish and got the bait well when they did decide to bite. Attached is a photo of one of the nicer fish I caught on the trip out, thank you all for reading and tight lines!

I went out to the lake with a buddy of mine for about 3.5 hours to try and do some late winter/early spring crankbait fishing for some early prespawn fish, as well as look for shallow cruising pre-spawn fish in the heated creek on the lake. We spent the first hour or so in the heated creek and were able to catch 3 small largemouth, one on a wacky rig, one on a drop shot, and one on a jack hammer all in about 2 feet of water. After that, we moved out to the main lake where the water temperature dropped from 66 to 51 degrees fahrenheit and I was able to catch a few decent fish cranking a Spro RkCrawler in about 10-12 feet of water along the rip rap at the dam and on some of the rocky points along the southeastern side of the lake, including the fish I have pictured with the report. The water clarity on the lake ranged from about 6 inches of visibility to about a foot and a half of visibility, and it was a partly cloudy day with a slight breeze coming from the northeast. Outside temperatures started out in the 30's and warmed up to the high 50's during the day. Overall it was a slower bite but still a lot of fun! Good luck if you decide to hit the lake and tight lines!
