Fished the MNBN Team trail championship over the weekend and finished up 7th. With overcast in the morning fish seemed to be on the edges of rice and roaming out in front of the rice reaction baits were able to get them to bite.. As the sun got higher the fish pushed into the rice and we started plunking open pockets and matted rice.

Submerged Vegetation
If you fish in the spring, look for northern bays and also places where there is current. In the spring of 2016, I caught about 25 largemouth. It was every cast and I could see them. Magical moment. I would also fish the rocks but be careful. There are a lot of rocks in places if you don't pay attention to the buoys and your graph. **Notice in the picture of the vegetation. That is a clue without giving all the information away.

Reeds
Just wrapped up a tournament and took 1st place. The fish were utilizing offshore reed islands and isolated cabbage beds. Most of the bigger bites came flipping the AT Grassmaster Jig along the back-side of reed islands. Locating isolated grass mats that were blown into the reed beds was key to the bigger bites. Fish were schooling together as well, and you could often flip back into the same area and catch multiple fish. Swimming the thunder cricket through the isolated cabbage beds triggered bites as well. You needed to get the bait caught in the upper-third of the cabbage and rip it free to elicit reaction bites. Fish were short-striking the bait if you were not ripping it through the grass. Smallmouth were hanging on flats at along the tips of main lake points. Locating cabbage beds or islated rocks on these flats was key to finding the fish. The smallies were swiping at the thunder cricket and I could then follow up with the vision 110 to put them in the boat.

It was a really hot day outside and all the fish were pushing back up into the shallow mats looking for shade. I was casting into the open pockets with a jackhammer and reeling it very close up to the surface. They would come out from the grass and eat it. We were on the very west side by the road.

Lily Pads
Dead River enters the lake from Tamarac Lake. Fish the deeper part of the lilipads in this bay for what they call dinner plate sized sunnies.

Lily Pads
Shallow flats with emerging lily pads. Cruising fish and fish on beds. Fan casting a soft senko and mixing in a frog for post spawn bass that are in attack mode. Belly weighted spark shad is also a great option and comes through the pad openings and lanes great.
