Matted Grass
Good largemouth to be found throughout the massive beds of matted up grass and duckweed found throughout the lake. One of the keys is to find mats close to deep water (more than 5 feet). Many of these mats move with the wind, and the bass will move with them. Another way to break these down is to pitch around the edges with a jig or neko rig.

Had a tournament on the Horseshoe Chain. Fish were relating to both inside and outside weed edges. I ended up getting big bass with a 20.25" largemouth that hit the jackhammer. Lots of fish were caught on all lakes in the chain.

Fished spinner baits in 2-3’ of water in pockets produced the best for me but also got 3 dog fish doing this. Also got a few fishing docks mostly small but did get one good one on a deeper dock but docks completely died down when the sun would go away.

Tough bite. Post spawn and a pretty extreme cold front for mid-June. Take off temp was 47 degrees. Small club derby and bite was so slow over half the field didn’t weigh in a limit. We were able to get a few bites along weed edges with both spinnerbait and chatter bait but drop shot produced the most bites for our boat. Fishing both inside and outside weed edges anywhere from 2-8 feet.

Watch the shorelines for hard bottom areas of sand, put your trolling motor down and follow the shoreline. Cast right up to where water meets the shoreline. Watch for beds if you can see them, the water is very murky. I like to use a braid and tie a short piece of mono to it about 5’ -8’ long and tie directly to the bait. If you pick up a weed, just give it a quick jerk to clear it and sometimes you will get a hit at that time. Good Luck!

We found postspawn fish scattered throughout the massive pondweed beds around the chain. Fan casting a neko rig along the mats as well as throwing a frog produced the best results. - Ben Nelson

Smallies were cruising shallow. Some were on beds. Casted on some weed rock transitions with chatter baits and then slowed down with the jib on some rocks and caught some good fish.
