Shad
Lake Belton has finally reached water temps of over 70 and nearly every species of fish in the lake are spawning!! Shad spawn is strong just before, and right at daybreak. The lake is cloudy with an algae bloom and visibility is only around a ft or so making sight fishing very difficult. Finess swimbaits, ned rigs and finesse jigs as well as short C-rigs with Zoom ring fry's are putting numbers in the boat but size is an issue but 2 1/2 to 4 lb fish are able to be caught.

The Smallmouth spawn is over with a few largemouths still on beds. Shad spawn is in full swing and there are a number of baits that will produce vicious strikes. I had the best luck with the scrounger, Luck E Strike, with the 2.8" Keitech in Silver flash or Bluegill flash. boated a number of good fish on a popper, Yellow Majic in bone, as well as a few more on a Spro square-bill in Citrus Shad. Also stuck a couple using a Booyah spinner bait in white. Water temps were finally in the mid-seventies with about 18 to 24"s of clarity.

Laydowns
Lake Belton is fairly unique in that it sports very clear water in many areas as well as largemouth and smallmouth. I was able to catch largemouth on small swimbaits and flukes, very shallow along laydowns in the creek arms. Smallmouth I caught in the main lake along laydowns, rock ledges and deep along submerged timber using both weedless wacky rigs and weighted weedless wacky rigs. This lake is a ton of fun! Good luck!

Fire any sort of small swimbait up on points where shad are spawning early in the morning and hold on! this is a hot and heavy, super fast paced bite that works well for largemouth and smallmouth this time of year on belton

Massive schools of shad abound and bass are transitioning for the fall. Was able to catch smallies and schools of spots along bluff walls that had deep drops nearby as well as points near main lake channels.
